Materials Available in the Iowa State University Archives
Useful to Genealogists
Alumni Directories, various years. These vary in style - some are by curricula, some cover certain time periods.
Catalog, 1880-present. These describe Iowa State's campus and curricula, and include lists of faculty members, including their departments and degrees. Earlier catalogs contain lists of students (including short course attendees) and graduates.
Commencement Programs, 1872-present. (The early years are not complete). These list all graduates, professional degrees, and honorary degrees.
County and Community Histories, various years. As part of the Rare Books collection, the Department has a large number of community histories, primarily produced as centennial books in the 1970s and 1980s. We have some county histories, and many more can be found in the Library's General Collection.
Directory, 1903-present. The staff directories list faculty and staff, their departments, campus and home addresses and campus and home telephone numbers. The student directories list student's majors, year in school, hometowns, Ames addresss, and campus and home telephone numbers.
Individual Alumni Files, various years. We have a large number of files on alumni, originally maintained by the Alumni Association, which were donated to the department in the early 1970s. When we find information on any of our graduates, we add this material to their file, or establish a file, if one does not exist.
Personnel Files, various years. Files are maintained on faculty and staff by department. These files may include information sheets filled out by the individual, press releases, newspaper clippings, reprints of articles written by the individual, or obituaries.
Photograph Files, various years. The University Archives has a large photograph collection, which includes images of faculty, staff, students, campus activities, and buildings.
Plat Books, various years. As part of the Rare Books collection, the Department holds a number of older plat books for counties in Iowa. More recent plat books can be found in the Library's General Collection and in the Media Center.
Yearbooks, 1897-1994. These include senior photographs, residence halls, fraternities and sororities, and documentation of student activities, including athletics and honorary societies.
